Yahoo Directory Closing

Yahoo has announced they will be closing the Yahoo Directory.

Yahoo announced on their official Tumblr account that they will have closed the Yahoo Directory.

A statement from them reads

Yahoo was started nearly 20 years ago as a directory of websites that helped users explore the Internet. While we are still committed to connecting users with the information they’re passionate about, our business has evolved and at the end of 2014 (December 31), we will retire the Yahoo Directory. Advertisers will be upgraded to a new service; more details to be communicated directly.

This will come as a shock to some experienced SEO experts in the industry given that the Yahoo Directory was once a highly regarded directory alongside The Open Directory (DMOZ) and it was believed Google used both directories as an indication to a sites authority level which could help in ranking.

DMOZ and Yahoo Directory both have very strict review acceptance policies and where DMOZ can take from 6 months to a year to have a listing reviewed (in some cases people are still waiting 2-3 years later). Yahoo gave the option of a non refundable review fee of $299 but like DMOZ with no guarantee of being accepted into the directory listings.

It will be interesting to see over the next few months what service Yahoo uses to take over from the current directory and whether it proves to be as important as the long running Yahoo Directory was at it's peak.
